Yesterday morning I tested out a new lens: the @venuslaowa 15 mm f/4.5 shift lens, the widest of its kind. I chose the Mærsk Tower by C. F. Møller as my first subject. There was a light drizzle and I didn't have a lot of time, so I only made two frames.
The lens impressed me. I'm not done evaluating it yet, but I'm sure I'll be showing more work made with this lens in the future.

Overformynderiet, an old Danish institution dating

Overformynderiet, an old Danish institution dating back to 1619, was recently renovated by Bertelsen & Scheving Arkitekter, who has been nominated for the EU Mies Award for their work. The marble that covers the facade was from a marble mine in Greenland that is now closed, and the original marble had to be reused, supplemented by some leftover marble blocks that had been found in the harbour.

Built in 1935-1937 Overformynderiet is one of the early concrete buildings in Denmark. It was designed by the Danish architect Frits Schlegel, who was a pioneer in the use of reinforced concrete. In 1931 he collaborated with Dansk Cement Central on building his own villa in Gentofte as one of three experimental houses in concrete, and later he also designed the wonderful chapel in Mariebjerg Kirkegård, that I’ve covered in an earlier post.

The Braunstein Taphouse (2020) by Adept ( @adeptarchitects ) is an exciting take on sustainable architecture.

While most houses that are built today essentially are made of concrete, the taphouse doesn’t use concrete at all. Instead it is constructed with a mix of CO2 neutral accoya wood, steel and glass that is assembled with mechanical joints only. This makes it easy to disassemble and recycle. As a result the amount of waste generated has been drastically reduced. As circular economy and cradle-to-cradle are slowly gaining momentum this house is very relevant.

The Braunstein Taphouse ( @pakhuset_braunstein )is located in the Køge municipality near Copenhagen.

The Resource Rows by Lendager Group (@lendagergrou

The Resource Rows by Lendager Group (@lendagergroup) and The Park Towers by Adept (@adeptarchitects) are situated next to each other in Ørestaden, one of the new city districts in Copenhagen. Both are noteworthy, but for different reasons.

The Resource Rows uses recycled materials from old buildings. What stands out the most is the facade. Bricks from houses constructed later than the 1960's cannot be recycled individually, since the mortar used is stronger than the brick. So the bricks have become elements. They were cut out of houses being taken down at Carlsberg former production plant - now @carlsbergbyen - and reused in The Resource Rows.

The Park Towers stands out by blending in. The three towers are adapted to their surroundings with airy, light bricks on top and darker bricks at the bottom. It is also a delight to see, that even though The Park Towers are now few years old, they have not lost their lightness. Seems they're ageing well.

Mariebjerg Kirkegård (Mariebjerg Cemetery) in Gen

Mariebjerg Kirkegård (Mariebjerg Cemetery) in Gentofte, a suburb of Copenhagen, was laid out in the years 1926-1933 by the architect G. N. Brandt. It is considered an important example of European modernist landscape architecture and it has been an inspiration for many other cemeteries, both in Denmark and abroad.

The cemetery I will return to. This is about the combined chapel and crematorium that it is to be found here. This little gem was designed by Frits Schlegel, who was the first to experiment with in situ cast concrete houses on Danish territory.

Mariebjerg Chapel is constructed around a frame of reinforced concrete. The facade - also concrete, north/south with glass mosaics - is retracted underlining the frame and pointing towards brutalism. Mariebjerg Chapel was finished in 1936, so the climbers have had plenty of time to cover the concrete facade. I love the dynamic between raw concrete and wild growth.

DONG Dortheavej Residence by @big_builds

A couple of days ago I came by DONG Dortheavej Residence while cycling around the edge of Nørrebro in Copenhagen. I imidiately liked it. It is a rather large house compared to the neighbouring buildings, but it blends in well by gradually scaling up and breaking up the wood facade with a simple, but efficient pattern and large windows. Somehow it reminds me of a stack of shipping containers - meant in a good way. I also like how it mirrors its curvy neighbour “Farvefabrikken”. A great example of quality public housing.

Vestre Fjordpark in Aalborg - once an airstrip for

Vestre Fjordpark in Aalborg - once an airstrip for floatplanes, later an open air waterpark - has been around for 70 years. The newly transformed waterpark, learning space and activity center was completed in 2017 by @adeptarchitects in collaboration with GHB (now @lyttarch_) , @orbicon_consulting and Niras.

It is a lively place and as well as providing space for many different activities - fx kayaking, windsurfing, winter bathing, canoeing - it also connects the city center of Aalborg with the ferry going to Egholm, a tiny island in Limfjorden.

The wood has aged beautifully acquiring a grey tone, that looks great together with the concrete. The appearance of buildings and the spaces they create changes drastically as the light moves during the day. It is a joy to watch.

Founded in 1953 @friismoltkearchitects are one of the older architecture firms in Denmark. On a recent trip to Aarhus I went to explore some of the buildings that they have build around Tilst, a suburb to Aarhus.

Skjoldhøj Kirke (1984) is a modernist take on the old village church, that you can find on hilltops all over the Danish countryside. Following a traditional east-west orientation (a trace of the Romans) the church lights up as the sun sets. The low section has later been extended, which in my opinion injects a slight imbalance to the otherwise beautiful building.

Skjoldhøjkollegiet is another classic from Friis & Moltke. Even though it is getting old - it was completed in 1973 - Skjoldhøjkollegiet is still the largest dormitory in Denmark providing housing for 1006 students. It is brutalism, yet very friendly with tight communities and extensive green spaces. There's a good dynamic between the architecture, the landscape and the sculptures by Kasper Heiberg.

Lastly there is Langkær Gymnasium (1975) with its oversized light intakes on the roof. It is designed after Friis & Moltke flexible school system from the 70's, which means that you can find familiar schools in cities such as Silkeborg and Slagelse.

I find it fascinating to see how buildings come alive with technology. The UN City in Nordhavn Copenhagen shields itself from the night by closing all the blinds. The facade of the star shaped building has 1400 blinds that moves as the light changes throughout the day. This, together with other energy saving technologies such as a seawater cooling system and solar cells, makes the building very energy efficient.

The @uncitycph was designed by @3xnarchitects in collaboration with @orbicon_consulting and @schonherrdk
It was completed in 2013. The UN City was awarded the GreenBuilding Award 2012 by the European Commission. It houses 11 organisations, which together employs 1500 people from 100 different countries.

Nordhavn, Copenhagen's old commercial harbour dist

Nordhavn, Copenhagen's old commercial harbour district, is an interesting place these days. The master plan from 2008 by @cobearchitects is really beginning to manifest itself, though the new city district is nowhere near completion. Everyday for years one truck after the other filled with soil from building sites around Copenhagen has gone to the tip of Nordhavn. Here the soil is dumped in the water as part of an expansion of Copenhagen (when completed Copenhagen will have grown 1%). The dirt from the trucks covers everything along the road giving it a slight beige tint.

Other places the water must also give way for land. Picture four shows the beginning of a new island in what used to be a harbour dock.

At the fringes the old harbour still maintains its industrial look, but even here the changes are evident.

The drive-in cinema by @meyers og @detdanskefilminstitut seen on the last photograph is a fine example of how @2150nordhavndk is changing. Here movies were projected on a tall stack of shipping containers while the country was shut down due to the coronavirus.

In 2050 the new district will be home to more than 40.000 inhabitants.

In the new Nordhavn district in Copenhagen you will find a block of buildings called Frikvarteret. One of the most prominent buildings here is a former blacksmith's workshop that has been transformed into six family homes by Vilhelm Lauritzen Architects. The lower part of building has been kept pretty much as it was (on the outside), while the roof has been replaced and a first floor added.

Just next to this building is another little house, that I like. It appears to be to be rooted in the functionalism movement, but it's kind of quirky still. I've not been able to find out, who is the architects behind it. If you know, I would appreciate if you drop me a line in the comments.

The Green Corner discussed in the previous post is also a part of this building block.

Simplicity when it is best. The Green Corner (completed in 2016) by Sangberg ( @sangbergarchitects ) is a simple concrete house with a metal grid that enables climbers to grow. The plants are of different kinds, which makes the building even more alive. A great little detail. I will be watching this house in anticipation of the day that it will be completely green. You can find it in the new Nordhavn district in Copenhagen.

The Centre for Cancer & Health (2011) by Nord Arch

The Centre for Cancer & Health (2011) by Nord Architects ( @nordarchitects ) is located in Nørrebro, Copenhagen just next to The Panum Institute. It features a monastery style inner courtyard that provides a peaceful space for relaxation, recovery and exercise.

It reminds me of a the former Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau in Barcelona by architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner (1901-1930). Not because of how it looks, but because both are examples of buildings that aims to encourage healing through architecture.

The car in front of the building is a Ford Mustang Mach I (1969–1978)

Carlsberg Byen ( @carlsbergbyen ), an old industri

Carlsberg Byen ( @carlsbergbyen ), an old industrial quarter that housed Carlsberg in the years 1847-2006, has rapidly been changing over the last couple of years. A few days ago I took a walk around the neighborhood to see how it is evolving. The masterplan by Entasis ( @entasisarkitekter ) makes space for nine high rises, where one, Bohrs Tower, has been completed and a few more is under construction.

The first photograph shows the view from J.C. Jacobsens Gade. On the far right you see Pasteurs Tower (by Vilhelm Lauritzen Arkitekter @vilhelmlauritzenarchitects ) being built while on the left you see the old Carlsberg HQ (1967-1969, architect Svenn Eske Kristensen), that’s about to be demolished. Additionally you see Christen Hus (by C. F. Møller @cfmoller_architects ) and Bønecke Hus as well the early stages of Caroline Hus and Niebelong Hus.

The second and third photograph shows Theodera hus by Adept ( @adeptarchitects ) which blends beautifully into the historic surroundings with its specially designed curved bricks.

The next photograph shows the historic building Kedelhuset, followed by two high rises under construction (Grønlunds Tower by C. F Møller and Pasteur's Tower by Vilhelm Lauritzen Arkitekter). Next up are two more photographs work-in-progress photos and then one of Rahbek Hus II (by Praksis Arkitketer @praksisarkitekter ). The last photograph shows the new @Carlsberg HQ (by C.F. Møller Architects @cfmoller_architects )

The first picture was taken on the 13. of November 2019, and the last on the 2. of December 2019.
At that time work on the foundation had been going on for a while. Suddenly - in one day - the eastern wall of the new skating rink was build. From then on visible changes could be observed on a daily basis.
The project will be completed in 2021.
